To odważna adaptacja prozy Brunona Schulza autorstwa legendarnych twórców animacji Braci Quay. Wielbicielem ich talentu jest m.in. Christopher Nolan, który poświęcił im jedyny stworzony przez siebie dokument. Seans odbędzie się w sali kinowej Zamojskiej Akademii Kultury, II piętro, wejście od ul. Akademickiej 8.
Bruno Schulz – autor literackiego pierwowzoru „Sanatorium Pod Klepsydrą” – to jeden z najoryginalniejszych pisarzy i artystów XX wieku. Jego tragiczny los również został zawarty w filmie, bo postać Schulza i jego wyobraźnia inspiruje Braci Quay od początku ich kariery. W pełnometrażowym dziele, które trzeba uznać za summę ich dokonań, stworzyli hybrydę animacji lalkowej i zdjęć aktorskich. Podziw budzi odważna decyzja, na jaką nie zdecydowałby się żaden polski reżyser – umieścić gęstą, poetycką frazę Schulza w oryginale. Daje to rozkosz słuchania hipnotycznej, wciągającej lektury.
SANATORIUM POD KLEPSYDRĄ WEDŁUG BRACI QUAY
Józef odwiedza swego ojca w tajemniczym sanatorium u podnóża Karpat. Wprawdzie ojciec nie żyje, ale w uzdrowisku cofnięto zegary. Doktor Gotard wyjaśnia, że to szczególna opieka nad zmarłymi, by nie zorientowali się, że są martwi. Tam ich życie jeszcze się nie skończyło, czas nie przeminął. Oglądamy zatrzymane wspomnienia w magicznym urządzeniu, pudełku optycznym, które dzięki alchemii, raz do roku, pozwala zobaczyć przez siedem soczewek mistyczne wizje zapisane w siatkówce oka. Wprawione w ruch odsłaniają ukrytą stronę rzeczywistości. Dzięki maszynie Józef spotyka ojca w wielu wcieleniach na różnych etapach życia. Stopniowo godzi się ze stratą i zostaje sam w tajemniczym pociągu, wracając do krainy życia.

📅 On April 24, 2025 at 6:30 PM, the screen will feature “The Hourglass Sanatorium according to the Quay Brothers”. This bold adaptation of Bruno Schulz’s prose was created by the legendary animation artists, the Quay Brothers. Among their admirers is Christopher Nolan, who dedicated the only documentary he ever made to them. The screening will take place in the cinema hall of the Zamość Academy of Culture, 2nd floor, entrance from Akademicka Street 8.
🎥 The Hourglass Sanatorium according to the Quay Brothers
Bruno Schulz – author of the literary original The Hourglass Sanatorium – was one of the most original writers and artists of the 20th century. His tragic fate is also reflected in the film, as Schulz’s imagination has inspired the Quay Brothers since the beginning of their career. In this feature-length work, considered the culmination of their achievements, they created a hybrid of puppet animation and live-action footage. Particularly striking is their bold decision – one no Polish director would dare – to include Schulz’s dense, poetic prose in its original form, offering the audience the delight of listening to hypnotic, immersive narration.
Plot: Józef visits his father in a mysterious sanatorium at the foot of the Carpathians. Although his father has died, the clocks in the sanatorium have been turned back. Dr. Gotard explains that this is a special care for the dead, so they do not realize they are gone. In this place, life has not yet ended, time has not passed. We witness frozen memories in a magical optical device, which once a year, through seven lenses, reveals mystical visions recorded in the retina. Set in motion, they uncover the hidden side of reality. Thanks to the machine, Józef meets his father in many incarnations at different stages of life. Gradually, he comes to terms with the loss and finally finds himself alone on a mysterious train, returning to the land of the living.
