Ian McKellen – a titan of acting who can do everything – returns after many years to the role of Hamlet. In the Royal Theatre in Windsor, emptied during the pandemic, ghosts appear, including Hamlet’s father, to remind a world plunged into chaos—and his son—of the indestructible power of revenge and theatre.
The bold idea of casting an 85‑year‑old actor as the young Danish prince allows us to see Shakespeare’s most famous play from a completely new perspective. Director Sean Mathias sets Elsinore across different spaces of the Theatre Royal Windsor—stage, backstage, dressing rooms, auditorium, corridors—paying homage to Shakespeare’s conviction that the world itself is a stage.
Ian McKellen is a master of theatre and a Shakespeare specialist. Beyond Hamlet, he has played Romeo, Macbeth, Coriolanus, and King Lear.
